Guide for Ship Building
Something to Know about Shipbuilding is You get (0) leveling experience from Shipbuilding. While it is Maritime unless you are sinking NPCs or Players you get Zilch experience for Shipbuilding.
The Same also goes for Fame, you get no Fame for Shipbuilding withing the Mechanics of the Game. Proficiency xp is all you get. Shipbuilding is also Very Boring/ Depressing on many's a days I would fall asleep while building a ship, several times a day. And All your friends are going to level and rank their skills faster Than you can, especially in the upper ranks of Shipbuilding.
Non-Shipbuilders should Also Read about SSP's and OSP's When Wanting a Ship built for something not standard. Standard ships are usually Any Ship you can Buy off the Shipyard Master. Standard Ships are relatively easy to build as they have fewer options
First being Wood or Metal which are location oriented as well, then there is Durability and displacement at little or greater cost in turn speed , Wave resistance and sails. If you are grinding standard ships just go with the Cheapest and Easiest as you get no more proficiency xp for any variations.
I recommend doing it in stages of Ranks, (1-6) are fairly easy, Also at r5 you can refit Ships, More on this later. Then R(7- 9 or 10) difficult but not as Mind or Ducat draining as R(10 -13). Also at the 10 -13 Start setting minor Goals like 25%, 50 %, 75% and so forth this will help with the depressing fact that all your friends are leveling way ahead of you. Then Maybe 1 rank at a time then a break, or make the Final Push to rank 16.
Shipbuilding skill proficiency = × 8.5 ÷ (total number of days shipbuilding + Level maneuvering conditions) but (rank +1 shipbuilding) is the Formula for gaining proficiency. Shipbuilding Rank4 Flute's (11/6/3 12 days shipbuilding) case, (11 +6 +3 +12) × 8.5 ÷ in (4 +1) = 32 × 8.5 ÷ 5 = 54.4, 54 degrees of skill proficiency acquisition. in Other words as you build Sambuks the Lower you ranks the more proficiency you get than someone with Higher Rank for the Same Ship. So you are getting quite a bit of Proficiency at r7 and hardly any proficiency Building the Same Sambuk are r12.
By Breaks I mean Go out and level something else like maritime/Battle or Merchant Trade or Adventure...for a few months. Sail a Bunch to lvl your Aide, keep him in Lieutenant, Ships Doctor, Paymaster or Storesmaster's Job to level his trade and battle/maritime as much as possible. Also Keep Ranking Handcrafts and Casting during Breaks.
Build Barcas until you can Build a Dhow at rank 3, then work on Dhow for a few ranks. Dhow are fine until about 7 if you Have Shipwrights job +1 and the Saw +1 you can go to East Africa, Red Sea, Calicut, and South East Asia and build Sambuks at rank 7, until about r12. If your Aide has popped +1 SB you can Start building Xebecs at r12, other wise build something cheap like Sambuks or maybe some Carracks until r13. Then do Xebecs if you are in Aden, Muscat, Persian, Indian Cities. or Trade Large Galleons if in Europe.
Also it is easier to Rank Shipbuilding by Grinding and Not taking Build orders, but not as Financially sound. As build orders ask you for something Special which if you are well ranked, is easy enough to build Free Style (FS) Parts and Ships. When you are trying to make the Final Push from r10 through r16 also this is when people want to give you more orders as you can build most ships in the last 3 or 4 ranks.
I Suppose Jobs leading to Ship building would be a good place to Start. I recommend Medicine trader to get Handicrafts Skills and Mineral Trader to get Mineral trading, Wares trading and Casting Skills. Earlier the Better for Both Jobs and I suppose it is better to Start with the Mineral trader job. Then with the Shipwright job you get +1 to Shipbuilding ranks up to 16 and Casting ranks up to 15.
Choose an Aide with Shipbuilding as soon as possible. I and most of My company have chosen Victor as an Aide, Probably because Casting goes Hand in Hand with Ship building also Handicrafts works Well with Casting and Shipbuilding you Need Handicrafts to Build Hulls. Victor does give you a hand with Casting +1 as well as Shipbuilding Later. He also decreases the amount of vigor used when Casting.
Nazario does the Same goodies and gets Shipbuilding 1 level earlier I probably should have gone with Nazario but Hey I happened to be in Seville and Chose Victor
Chester is Similar and has Casting Task, automates casting when sailing, Instead of Casting Assistance(for using less Vigor). Which I am not familiar with Casting Task, but sounds cool if combined with Management Skill. And He’s gets Shipbuilding Much Earlier at lvl 30
Not sure what to think of other Ship building Aides At this time.
Tools Hammers and Saws the Hammer gives you a give a +1 to Casting and Repairs
and the Saw +1 goes to Handicrafts and Shipbuilding. Do NOT sail with Saws and Hammers as they Only have 5 Durability and sailing Sucks the Dura right out of these Items. I have lost many a Saw and a few Hammers by Not putting them away in Storage or vaults.

SSP's Are NC Cash Items that are NOT transferable ( meaning Only the Shipbuilder needs Buy them) and since they are NC Cash Items at some Point the Ship Builder Needs to pay Real Cash for them.
Some Skills Can Be Added With Original Ship Permits(or OSP's). OSP's are gained By trading 200 Patriot Awards (or PA's) for 1 OSP at the Secretary in the Palace or National Settlement/Colony(Grand Cayman, Trujillo, Cayenne, Willemstad, Caracas, Pernambuco). I know PA's are transferable, so while I am not certain, I believe OSP's are transferable. And there is a recipe Factor here, also.
OK Now If you are still Understanding the Differences there, we will move on to the start Improving a ship I recommend Studying the Recipes in uwodb/Ivyro Also FS Part Use Skills other Than Ship Building. Sewing, Casting, Handicrafts, Cooking and Storage. Oh 1 More thing to know About SSP's and Improvement's each Successive Improvement cost more SSP's , Initially costing 3 SSP's for the First Improvement, then costing 6 SSP's for the Second, 9 for the 3rd, 12 for the 4th, and 15 SSP's for the 5th improvement, and so forth. So for 5 Improvements you need 45 SSP's at 5 SSP's per $1.00 that is 9 dollars in real Money.
OK I Am building a Plain Clipper that needs Emergency Acceleration as Per Customers Order. Not Starting with a Hull as I should but having Already Built a clipper as a standard ship. The recipe calls for a Large gaff sail and an Antifouling paint. I coulsd Sail to somewhere and get the boulders and go make the Paint, But as I am in a bit of a hurry I am not doing this I am just buying it in Company Shops, Same with Large gaff sail Since I do not have the Sewing ranks yet. But I could make the sails to save some money if I had the Ranks
I do Make Hulls and Gun-ports etc. to save money sometimes and increase profits. but here I have the Items in inventory when I am Making the Improvement.

You can see it is adding to total for Sails. this is the recipe for EA , I have tried Adding other Armaments that some times caused Failure in the EA there is a Page of recipes that Fail or Pass in JWiki. It will Pass with a Gun-port. But a Large Mast Won't Pass and If I add High Quality Rigging I will get a ship with Enhanced Handling instead of Emergency Acceleration. The 3/9 is referring to cost in SSP's.
OK Now to building a Full Free Style Ship the First part is to Build the Hull. Certain Hulls are built in certain ports. Large Basic Hulls are built in Caribbean national settlements as Mentioned above and medium and Small Hulls are built in various European ports, Rowing Hulls are built more in eastern European or Arabic ports. When Building a FS ship it is important to have Sails of some sort and gun-ports in inventory and you can build in a Skill for free 0 SSP's this way as the initial build doesn't require them. Also Initial FS Builds Have certain Cities for Certain Ships, Several are in Seville. NOTE if you Have the NC Cash to Change Nationalities $20 each for a Nice Defection and some for investing 5 million ducats This will allow you to Build in Other Cities.
First Column is rank in Shipbuilding
Third Column is Ship Types and Sailing Days to Build I copy and Pasted from JWiki and some I do not Have translations for. Some May Not be Accurate Also I translated and Corrected what I could.
