Guide for Sewing
Sewing's a skill that's particularly rewarding right from the start, and does manifest some interesting aspects as it gets higher in rank. If you want some quick and easy money without having to level the skill, this skill's for you.
First off, for sewing your job class should be Yarn Trader. This gives you favored skills in fiber trading and sewing, whereas the other low-level job class with sewing as a favored skill, accountant, has no supporting skills. If you want to obtain sewing without switching your job class, it can be learned in Genoa from Duchess Traetto or the merchant GM in Tunis (it requires R3 fabric trading). Aside from fiber trading, another useful skill to have for this is livestock trading, as you will be frequently be buying sheep and shearing them.
To level the skill, there are a few recipe books necessary. Shipwright Basic Sewing (obtainable in many places, Antwerp's the closest to London) will allow you to level while re-stocking your spare sails, hammocks, and cat o nine tails. Fabric Secrets- Hardwares is another necessary one, this allows you to shear/pluck livestock. The other two books you'll need are Fabric Secrets- Cloth (obtainable from Antwerp) starting at R3 and Fabric Secrets- Fine Cloth (obtainable from your capital provided you've invested enough in it) at R7. Also keep in mind that Bamboo Brooms give you +1 to your sewing skill if you ever want a boost to a more profitable rank. Later on, you'll want to get the Fabric Secrets- Design Dye book, available for 800k for Dutch players, and Machilpatnam for the same amount for everyone else. Also, you'll need Mode Design 3 later on to make embroidery thread, available from at the very least Pisa, and numerous other places.
The best place to level sewing at first is between Den Helder and Edinburgh. The Hardwares book lets you shear/pluck anything you come across with just R1, and feathers from chickens and ducks should net you a pretty penny early on. The R3, R4, R7, and R8 ideal recipes all require wool. Because of this, Oslo is also a good place to stop by, as they also sell wool there. London sells a bit of wool, but not very much for non-English players. At R1-R2, you should pluck chickens, sheer sheep, and make Shipwright items. R3, you can start making woolen fabric. R4, you can start making wool knit. At R7, you can start making flannel, but you may want to continue making knitted fabric until R8, as flannel takes a long time. But hey, it's also a local good if you're making any trips soon. At R8 you can make tweed.
For Rank 10 and above, you gotta travel further. Flax into lace from Oslo, Stockholm, and Visby is a good thing to do if you're around some, but due to 6 flax being necessary for each unit of lace, it's not a particularly efficient way to rank. the Fabric Secrets Design Dye book allows you to make Turkish and Persian Rugs at R10 and R11 respectively, and is the preferred way to do these ranks. To utilize (and obtain for that matter) this book, you really have to be over in India, the land of higher-ranked sewing. Turkish Rugs can be a bit of a pain though if you don't have a high livestock trading skill, as wool's a fairly precious commodity in India, available only from Pondicherry.Once you hit R13, you can begin making Velvet, a highly profitable means of ranking late in the game (You can begin at R12 if you have a bamboo broom). It's recommended that you stick with Velvet until you finish sewing. Velvet requires embroidery thread, which requires sewing kits, so make sure to bring plenty with you from Europe. For R14, you can also make Gobelin Fabric, but this recipe is also wool-intensive, and is recommendable only if you have a good livestock trading.
In summary, for R1-R2 you should stick to processing feathers and sheep, R3 wool fabric, R4-R6 wool knit, R7 flannel, R8-R9 tweed, R10 lace and turkish rugs, R11-R12 persian rugs, R13-R15 Velvet and Gobelin fabric. While there are other jobs that have sewing favored, it's recommendable that you stick with Yarn Trader due to the favored textile skill ability, as obtaining silk thread will be a great concern later on.
